The primary goal of any science society in a country is to advance the relevant science and technology for welfare of people of the country. This is achieved through reporting and discussing new findings among members of the society at a conference, and furthered more through discussing new findings. Optimum weed control for agriculture production has long been required and its technology progressed since started agriculture in human history. The weed control and management technology, however, has formed a field of modern science in late 1950s upon the discovery of practical value of 2,4-D and MCPA in farming. Use of herbicides for weed control has contributed so much to a labor-saving agriculture, but exerted certain troubles of chemical pollution of environment and herbicide- tolerant weeds. The second big progress made in weed science may be development and use of the herbicide-tolerant crops. Rapid and increasing adoption of genetically modified herbicide-resistant crops from late 1990s brings about rapid shift in weed community structure as well as increase in herbicide-tolerant gene flow and super weeds The unsolved problem of herbicide tolerance of weeds, and rapid emerging new problems of shift in weed community and gene flow into crop fetal may not be problems restricted to a country or region. Weed science faces up to these challenges. There is an old wisdom in the Orient that says ‘Better to hold by two person seven for a very light sheet of paper’. China, Japan and Korea, major countries in the East Asia, have developed own unique culture in history, but also share many cultural in heritance as they are neighbors. Much of the important weed species are common in three countries, and major tasks in weed science are also common. I would like to call sincerely for close and effective collaboration of the weed science societies in the East Asia to resolve the present weed problems in the region and advance the weed science for the world.
