The topic given to me was “Contribution of Weed Science Society to East Asian Agriculture”. It was difficult to quantify contribution of each society of three countries to East Asian agriculture. This paper provides a brief summary of the history and achievements of the Weed Science Society of the East Asian countries. The societies have provided the facts and technologies for weed management to the farmers, increasing crop yield. A new technology (use of herbicides) released the farmers from tedious works of manual weed removal and activated agro-chemical industry, and on the other hand, the societies have offered appropriate alternatives to manage herbicide resistant weeds and invasive weeds. The societies deeply consider how to adopt herbicide resistant (HR) GM crops in days to come. Benefits and profitability of HR GM crops in environment should be thoroughly proved for the farmer’s use. The big challenge is to feed an increasing world population in the years to come. The limitation to improved weed management is a limited imagination of the researchers themselves. Weed science will play a significant role in the success of efficient agricultural production system.
