Since the 1990s, many alien weeds (ex. Abutilon theophrasti, Cyperus esculentus, Sicyos angulatus, and Solanum carolinense) that have been unintentionally introduced into Japan have caused serious problems in forage crop fields. The most recent report on the topic pertains to invasion by some alien annual Ipomoea species into soybean fields. The most problematic characteristic of Ipomoea is its rapidly growing long vine that occasionally causes catastrophic damage to soybean plants. A questionnaire-based investigation performed in 2008 showed that 1,613 ha of soybean fields (3.3% of the soybean fields investigated), especially 26% of the soybean fields in Tokai region, were infested by some alien annual Ipomoea species. To determine the cause of the introduction on a large scale, contaminants of imported grains were investigated in 1993-1994, and on average, 20 weed species were found to be present in each shipment of imported grains. Most of these grains were imported from the Unites States and contained not only the already problematic alien weeds such as A. theophrasti, Amaranthus spinosus, and Solghum halpense, but also “native” species such as Setaria faberi, Rumex japonicas, and Echinochloa spp. To over come the present situation, our group is now planning to develop the early warning system for alien weeds in arable land. In this system, alien weed species will be ranked in the order of priority according to 3 stages of invasion: pre-entry, recently established, and epidemic. Priority will be given to each species, depending on the seriousness of the problem in North America and alack of control methods. In conclusion, the introduction of alien weeds via imported grains is a problem not only in Japan but also in Korea, China, and all of the East Asian countries. Any information gathered in our country would be useful for other countries. Collaboration and cooperation among countries is probably the only solution to this problem.
