This paper attempts to examine the theoretical state and practical implication of Kojin Karatani"s theory of modes of exchange by relating it to K. Marx"s thoughts. To epitomize Karatani"s ideas, capitalism is to be understood not as a mode of production but as a mode of exchange; thus, it can be overcome solely by transforming mode of exchange. He claims that there exists a close tripartite interconnection among such different modes of exchange as capitalism, nation, and state in today"s world; to imagine and realize the fourth one is needed to go beyond the trinity and he names it "association". This mode is characterized by the attributes of market economy that preserves individuals" freedom and competition but supposedly abolishes the endless accumulations of capital.
Karatani suggests a kind of libertarian socialism as an alternative to capitalism and considers Marx to be a thinker who attempted to overcome ills of capitalism through the rehabilitation of "association" in the history of modern socialist thoughts. Karatani"s theory of modes of exchange appears to be a critical alternative to Marx"s theory of modes of production, which is not necessarily true. He regards the concept of production in Marx"s theory as exchange in a broader context. Unlike the conventional marxists, Marx understood production as metabolism(Stoffwechsel), namely, exchange (Wechsel) in a sense that human beings are basically placed in relation with the nature. He subverted "idee fixe" about Marx via drastic reinterpretation of Marx"s Capital. This papers aims to clarify his arguments and to evaluate its significance and limitations.
