The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the meaning usage and substitution relationship between the Japanese passing verbs of “sugiru” “tatsu” and their counterpart Korean verbs “zinada” “hwrwda” The result of the study shows that Japanese “sugiru” means “cross the reference point, pass the time and period with the width, pass the set times or period after something happens, passing of the simple and vague time, end of the certain time and period, become the past.” In addition, Japanese “tatsu” means “pass the set times or period after something happens, passing of the simple and indefinite time, passing of the indefinite time.” On the contrary, Korean “zinada” which is similar to Japanese “sugiru” means “cross the reference point, pass the time and period with the width, pass the set times or period after something happens, passing of the simple and vague time, end of the certain time and period, become the past.” Korean “hwrwda”, which means “passing of the period with the width, passing of the simple and vague time, pass the set times or period after something happens”, has very limited ranges compared with “zinada” Accordingly, the study shows that the passing verbs of both Korean and Japanese have similarity in many respects. For the counterpart and substitution relationship of both languages, refer to the chart of the conclusion.
