Research work presented in this paper highlight the problems of environmental degradation and ecological changes which have been occurred in the urban fringe areas of Aligarh city located in the plains of north India. The problem has been studied by raising the issues related to land degradation and resource utilization, destruction of wetland ecosystems and loss of biodiversity. These problems have also been dealt with concerning environmental pollution due to contamination of air and open dumping of urban waste. Due to hasty pace of urbanization, land is needed (for space and material) for day today construction and filling of depressions. As a result of this, land degradation occurs due to strip mining, brick kilning, dumping of urban waste and coal ash dumping which is a dilatory matter of great concern. The study also attempted to find out the problems and threats to urban wetlands in the city fringe, and their encroachments for urban purposes. Environmental pollution too has also found a direct impact on socio-economic and ecological setting of urban-rural environs.
