This study set out to investigate the specific patterns of “shaman-believer relationships” in the shamanism of the 16th century and look into the aspects of honest daily lives of female shamans and their families through MukJae’s Diary by Lee Mun-Gun.
Shaman-believer relationships represented the religious and social bond between shamans and believers. The relationships formed around Guts expanded to all the aspects of daily life. Shaman-believer relationships have been understood at the level of believer’s request and shaman’s response. The study developed its argument around what shamans asked for from believers, which had been neglected.
Chu-Wol, a female shaman, asked for a variety of things from the family of Lee Mun-Gun: first, she asked for medicinal stuff essential to daily life and funeral items; secondly, she asked Lee Mun-Gun to help to reduce her sentence when she was imprisoned for bribery; thirdly, she solicited for the exemption of shaman taxes imposed on shamans; and finally, she and her husband made a personnel solicitation for him to become an officer.
Those findings indicate that the female shaman Chu-Wol and her family tried to solve many of their pressing issues. Their solicitation for her husband to become an officer, in particular, reveals how the family of a female shaman tried to be part of the ruling class in the country. It also helps to estimate how severely the military service system had collapsed in the 16th century.
Lee Mun-Gun, an illustrious official from the noble class, met the demands of the female shaman Chu-Wol as much as possible, which was possible because he had a shaman-believer relationship with her. It was also because not only was she a female shaman of religious authority in the Seongju area, but she also provided religious consolation to his family in case of such distress as illness and death as well as during ordinary times.
