The purpose of the present study is to examine the biblical concept of holiness in the book of Genesis. Traditional Old Testament theologians have not given much attention to the theme of holiness in the Old Testament. In addition, the studies on holiness have been focused mostly on the books such as Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy within the Pentateuch. In contrast, the book of Genesis has not drawn scholarly attention, partly because the terms referring to the status of holiness do not appear frequently in Genesis. While the root vdq is almost totally absent from the book of Genesis, various aspects of holiness are included within the Genesis texts. By examining the texts which contain various aspects of holiness(Genesis 2, 6, 15, 17, 22, 37-50), this study intends to explore a possibility of taking the book of Genesis as a starting point to discuss the biblical concept of holiness in the Old Testament. After the careful scrutiny of the selected Genesis texts, it is concluded that there is no biblical character in Genesis who can be evaluated as morally or ethically excellent from the perspective of holiness or sanctification. In the book of Genesis, the concept of holiness applies to the Sabbath, the institution designed by God. On the contrary, the terms describing biblical characters in Genesis emphasize the aspects of their special relationship with God more than their moral or ethical excellence.
