Some studies that chronologically trace the datesof Protagoras’ life and death have been suggested in modern scholarship, suchas the works by, for instance, J. S. Morrison (1941), J. A. Davison (1953), andU. Zilioli (2007). Despite the value of those works, however, some inconsistenciesthat bring forth controversy regarding the credibility of dates of Protagoras’activities and the exact reason of the sophist’s expulsion from Athens, stillremain. This paper aims to provide the most suitable dates of Protagoras’ lifeand death and the argument for the actual political reason of his expulsion athis time in the light of the sophist’s association with Pericles.
