We have experienced with the mega events contributing to international society and to image improvement of the host city. Mega events have mobilized enormous capital on the basis of national consensus. And they were acting as the catalyst for the evolution of the city and new value. Therefore we need to find the meaning of mega events in terms of momentariness along with the lasting of the cities as the clusters of civilizing history throughout long time.
Mega events have contained ‘supporting projects’ in additions to ‘essential projects’ in the physical settimgs. Supporting projects are important in terms that they could introduce cities during festival as well as they could make cities function well, though they were not essential for operating the enent, so the investments for them are right. Therefore the host city can be settled within the short time concentrating on the investments in the general infrastructure through the supporting projects.
In the mean time we have had lack of the consideration of the city and architecture because of excessive concentration on the success of events throughout preparing process. As the result, historical resources and the image of the city were sullied easily. These defamations were heard with the voices of criticism on many issues and subjects along the paradigm shift with the urban context in municipal environment. The insufficient level of consideration of long term usage plan at the time of intensive supplies of the large scale buildings and infrastructures used to resulted in host cities being burdened with managing and operating these facilities. So after the event, they were remained as the afflicted things against the way of practical use.
Though we could not solve all the problems through the performing various kinds of mega events, some degrees of evolution have been achieved by trial and error, with struggling to identify our cities and try to find out new proper values for the needs of the times. Prior to the success of short-term events, we must have deep discussions about the principles and the ways toward universal value and a point of long term view in order to put the right function into the city and architecture for the self -creation of new value. These must be at the side of the municipal knowledge industry as well.
