We conducted a census of the bird species inhabiting the intertidal flats (1.47km2) of Changpo Bay and the adjacent rice paddies in Jinjeon-myeon, Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province, Korea, from March 2012 to February 2013. Seventy-five species belonging to 30 families from 12 orders were documented, with the maximum number of birds recorded at a given time (1933) during November 2012. The average number of species (26±5) recorded during the monthly surveys remained relatively stable throughout the year. However, a greater number of birds was recorded from November to March (1525±328) than that in the other months (382±97). Eight endangered or legally protected species were observed during the study, specifically, the black-faced spoonbill Platalea minor, the Peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus, the Cinereous vulture Aegypius monachus, the common kestrel Falco tinnunculus, the hooded crane Grus monacha, the eastern curlew Numenius madagascariensis, the long-billed plover Charadrius placidus, and Saunder’s Gull Larus saundersi. This study confirms that Changpo Bay could qualify as an internationally important wetland area under the Ramsar Convention, because it supports a number of endangered species and because it is a representative of the intertidal flat of Gyeongnam Province. Up to 800 Eurasian skylarks Alauda arvensis were observed in the rice paddies surrounding the bay during the winter, which is unusual, and might have been caused by the abnormally cold weather. Because bird species require diverse habitats to adapt to increasingly unpredictable weather conditions that are assumed to be caused by climate change, it is necessary to protect species-rich habitats such as Changpo Bay, Korea.
