Do the inflows and outflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) improve domestic industry performance? This paper investigates effects of inward and outward foreign direct investment on the demand for production factors and productivity, using 1991-2009 panel data for 18 Korean manufacturing industries. Empirical result shows that a industry’s stock of inward FDI from developed countries is positively related to the domestic employment and capital accumulation. On the other hand, a industry’s stock of outward FDI heading for developing countries is found to be negatively related to domestic employment and domestic capital stock. It also shows that inward FDI from developed countries in 1990-1999 and outward FDI heading for developing countries in 2000-2009 are positively related to domestic productivity.
