The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of stiletto heel height in unilateral stance on women’s static balance. Nine female subjects, aged 20-24 years, volunteered to participate for the study. Subjects were required to stand as still as possible with their arms along the body on one leg on a force platform. Subjects were tested in bare feet and 4 pairs of shoes. Shoes were women’s dress pumps with stiletto heel. The height of-stiletto heel was 3, 5. 7. and 9㎝, and the width was 0.8㎝. The displacement of center of pressure (CP) under the foot was measured to evaluate postural stability. The results indicated that increasing heel height decreased static balance. The length of displacement of the CP did not show any significant changes below a 3㎝ heel height, but increased significantly above a 5㎝ heel height. In all experimental conditions anterior-posterior (AP) sway did not show any significant change, but mediaI-lateral (ML) sway revealed a significant increase with heel height. Post-hoc analysis revealed that the ML sway significantly increased in the 7 and 9㎝ heel height. These findings suggest that a critical height of stiletto heel for producing balance hazards locates between 3 and 5㎝. The poor balance in ML direction seems to derive from a decrease in foot abduction angel caused by high heels.
