The 1930s in Korea was a decade in which national identity and history were collapsed and lost forcedly by Japanese colonialist. Under the chaotic state of affairs, a system of commercial popular culture was brought into Korea from Japan. And the persons of popular culture who participated in the inflowing process coped with the popular culture with the two opposite attitudes, acceptance and protection. Kang Seok-Yeon, who was one of the representative singers in the 1930’s popular song world, performed as a singer in the two attitudes. She became a member of theatre group, Toweolhoe in her mid-teens, built up her experience in the theatre stage for many years. And her natural gift as an actress was recognized widely and also made her cut a conspicious figure as an intermission singer. Based on these experiences, she was selected as a singer under exclusive contract with Victor Record Co. at the age of 21 in 1931 and was raised to famous pop singer with Otongnamu, Wandering Song. Continuing her singing career at Columbia Record Co., Taihei Record Co., she released an album of folk songs, Sketsch, drama narration, Nonsense comedy which were about 131 pieces in total. Her singing career continued until about 1939. In her career as a singer, keeping tune with the general public directly in the colonial period, she consoled and encouraged them in their hard lives. However, as time passes, her herself and songs were buried in the period of turbulence and almost disappeared into oblivion. Various materials about her such as birthplace, real name, educational background, specific career, released albums are in dire need of a definite arrangement and organization. Therefore, this study is to recompose her lives and activities and then to restore them in the history of Korean popular culture by collecting and arranging comprehensively the albums in collectors’ possession, the recordings and elucidations of family of the deceased, and some existing materials.
