Michikusa was serialized in Asahi Newspaper from June 3rd to September 10th in 1915. It was then published as a book in October.
Masamune Hakucho once said that Soseki was a good but vulgar writer in his Soseki-ron (06/1928). He had a mixed evaluation on Soseki’s writings, but considered Michikusa to be the most important piece of work (Michikusa ni tsuite 02/1927).
Michikusa is a story of money and minds.
The money aspect comes from the economic situation around the Russo-Japanese War and it reflects the darkness of its time. The minds reveal the agony which derives from the paradox of relationships. The strained relationships lead to identity crisis of characters, and it is the very thing that we face even today.
That is why Michikusa has universal quality.
