This article explores Quaker spirituality from the viewpoint of the integrated spirituality between the inner spiritual experience and the practice for social reform. The integrated spirituality indicating the unity between faith and practice has been continued to modern Quakerism from early Quakerism.
The religious sources of Quaker spirituality are explored as grounded on the reformative faiths of primitive Christian faith, Anabaptism, John Calvin and Puritanism.
Quaker spirituality expresses the spirituality of silence being characterized by a silent worship and a sacrament of silence in which they experience a direct meeting with God. Since early Quakerism, Quaker silent worship and sacrament of silence have distinguished the Quaker liturgies from mainstream Christian liturgies. Quakers believe ‘Light within’ and ‘that of God in everyone’. These spiritual entities are basic grounds for Quakers making spiritual experience internally in silence possible, and reveal what Quaker mysticism is about immanence of divinity.
Quaker spirituality indicates a spirituality of practice for social reform towards justice and peace. Inner mystic experience becomes authentic as it is practically expressed to social reform. This type of social activism-oriented spirituality is referred to ‘ethical mysticism’ which it provides a critical reflection on selfish and complacent faith prevailing in religions today. By the same token, spirituality-based social activism stimulates a critical reflection on blind and group egoism-centered activism.
Quaker integrated spirituality is characterized in terms of peace, equality and simplicity. Quakers opposes warfare unconditionally and rejects to use carnal weapons. It is a spirituality of peace that inspires courage to be a minority to practice the ideal of peace in the world. Quakers tend to live with a spirituality of equality to respect human dignity and to eliminate all the conditions of social discrimination from the human community. Quakers seek voluntarily a simple life spiritually as well as materially. Quaker spirituality of simplicity is a core value and a way of life overcoming consumerism and growth-centerism in religious as well as economic life today.
