By increasing a number of elderly people, the number of people with dementia has been increasing steadfastly. Consequently, the demand for residence and care facilities of the elderly with dementia has increased but the facilities and service providing institutes are far short of the desired level. Korean government is making efforts to expand the care facilities to fill up the nursing care needs but such efforts may be restricted to simple quantitative increase in space without their quality of life and welfare. The purpose of this study is to analyze the care facilities for the people with dementia in Europe in order to find out their design characteristics and traits among the successful case examples of advanced countries. As a means of study, contents analysis method was adopted to find out the recent design trend and trait of care facilities for the people with dementia in Europe. The layout-structure characteristics of surveyed care facilities were analyzed according to 18 nursing home cases in Europe. The result of study reveals that architecture and indoor facilities are not considered as the most important factors, which are different from the typical facilities in existing conventional care facility architectures. On the other hand, by providing architectural, social and systematical environment that enables the people with dementia to lead their normal life progressively, it can be found that their living environment greatly contributes to their recuperation and treatment and enhancement of their quality of life. In conclusion, this fact can be used as basic information for design guidelines that can be applied to develop the residential environment for the people with dementia in Korea. Particularly, it is expected that this can be applied to all those people including architects, designers and owners of constructions who have influence upon care facilities for the elderly.
