The Grand Council Copies of Manchu Palace Memorials (Manwen yuezhebao) include the copies of palace memorials sent by provincial officials in Manchuria to the emperor. Among them, 71 copies were related with Chos?n affairs, dealing with illegal crossing of the border, repatriation of castaways, investigation of borderlines, affairs related Korean envoys to China, investigation and sacrifice to Changbai Mt. etc.
Only one fourth of the 71 copies are quoted in Qing’s official letters to the Chos?n court collected in Tongmunhwigo. The rest concern with Qing court’s inner discussions on Chos?n affairs, sometimes containing classified information to Chos?n. Meanwhile, a few of the 71 are quoted in Qingshilu or have their Chinese translations in archives. But the quotations and translations are not complete and very often include errors. The case studies based on Manwen yuezhebao related with Chos?n: discovery of Henglu’s forgotten journey to Changbai Mt. and a new interpretation on the Mangniushao issue of 1746, demonstrate the value of these Manchu copies.
Manwen yuezhebao was only one kind of Manchu archival materials containing records on Choson-Qing relationship, and there are a numerous number of Manchu archival materials which are yet to be disclosed. I urge students on this topic pay close attention to Manchu language and archives.
