The purpose of this paper is to show how Nam Gongcheol(南公轍) accepted Yuan Hongdao(袁宏道)’s works with his critical viewpoint. In 1792, Nam Gongcheol, the representative literary official(gwangakmunin, 館閣文人) of the time of the Joseon kings such as Jeongjo and Sunjo, was reprimanded for using some vocabularies as ‘Godong’(古董) by the king, Jeongjo. We can estimate that the vocabularies, which were used by Nam Gongcheol, were Gonganpai(公安派) frequently used at that time. It was due to some common grounds for political intentions, but was also due to familiar expression of the Gonganpai even in public writings like counterplan writings(daechakmun, 對策文).
Nam Gongcheol accepted three things from Yuan Hongdao’s works. The first one was the relativistic literary viewpoint. The second was ‘dung beetle metaphor’. The third was self-complacency creation attitude. And he sent these characteristic letters to Kim Jaeryeon(金載璉) and Bak Namsu(朴南壽) who had critical attitudes for Ming(明) dynasty literature. It seems that Nam Gongcheol accepted the Yuan Hongdao’s works from Yi Deokmu(李德懋) when he was young, and Yuan Hongdao also influenced Nam Gongcheol from the trend that pursuited Gonganpai’s works with favor. But Nam Gongcheol’s critical viewpoint was based on Tangsongpai(唐宋派). As the stance of Tangsongpai’s critical viewpoint was considerably common with Gonganpai’s, though he criticized Gonganpai apparantly, he accepted both of those stances.
