Recently, traditional Korean housing is being used in various ways, such as a cafe or restaurant, etc. This study looked into the characteristic applied by the traditional Korean style and the present conditions of the space elements of a modern cafe located at Samcheong-dong, and did documentary consideration and conducted an on-site survey. This study limited its case survey sites to 6 cafes which opened after 2005 and went through partial refurbishment and made an analysis of these six cafes by dividing the morphological elements and functional elements of space into a form, structure, material, and color. The survey results showed that the space retains its form as a traditional Korean house, makes the most of its traditional atmosphere and characteristics; in addition, for the refurbishment, modern style was used for the functional elements such as furniture, lighting and finishing materials. However through the use of design and quality materials was harmonized with the morphological element of a building, lessening the heterogeneity with individual elements and directed the space was harmonized with the traditional Korean style. In order to more accurately, draw the present situation of the expression and characteristics of the traditional Korean style manifested in a modern cafe. In-depth research is needed such as questionnaire survey of cafe users for analyzing accurate situation.
