During the time of introduction of the Western culture, securing the competitive power in the Orient meant catching up with the advanced Western culture. The Western culture saw the nature as what should be conquered, and achieved the advanced technology, urbanization and international commercialization. These results, however, caused very confusing relationship between the human beings and the nature, and problems that include environmental catastrophe. After the technical and cultural development, the culture of harmonized life without going against the course of human beings and nature is needed more than ever before. This requires the whole-minded and comprehensive Oriental thoughts rather than the analytical and human-oriented Western thoughts. The Oriental thought emphasizes the unification of nature and human beings, and is becoming a new alternative to reduce the destruction of nature and humanity that the modern materialistic culture brought about. Japan is one of the countries that developed the architecture in harmony with the nature, culture and tradition, and its architecture is continuously developing. In the situation where the past and present, and Oriental and Western characteristics are blended, modern architects in Japan are trying new compromises considering their tradition. Kengo Kuma understands the architecture as part of the nature, and expresses in his works the Oriental views of nature and tradition that focus on the accommodation to and harmony with the nature. He presents the Japanese tradition in the architectural thoughts and spaces via ‘erase’ or natural architecture. This study was performed to find a new methodology for approaching and analyzing the Korean tradition in the modern spatial design by studying the characteristics of Japanese tradition in Kuma’s architectural thoughts and spaces.
