The fuel economy in a 2.0L diesel engine was improved using dual loop EGR system and EMS optimization. Dual loop system consists of conventional high pressure EGR system and low pressure EGR system designed with back pressure controller and additional EGR cooler. To estimate fuel economy improvement in a vehicle, 7 key part load operating points were chosen to represent engine behavior on NEDC cycle. For the optimization of ratio of HP EGR and LP EGR at the operation points, HP EGR and VGT positions were swept while controlling LP EGR rate to maintain same NOx emissions. By break down of BSFC value into thermal efficiency and pumping efficiency, increasing LP EGR rate was found to increase indicated thermal efficiency by lowering intake air temperature and increasing A/F, but if LP EGR was used over certain amount, the deterioration of pumping efficiency could offset the gain due to too high back pressure required to make needed LP EGR rate. Optimized calibration showed BSFC was improved by 2.2%~4.2% and smoke by 29~56% at each points on constant NOx and boost pressure conditions to maintain baseline emissions and acceleration performance. Based on the key part load results, vehicle fuel economy was estimated to be improved by 3.5% at NEDC cycle.
