Architecture and film are two media that share many properties: both involve a temporal unfolding of space; their spaces, unlike that of a sculptor, are inhabited by human activities; and, most importantly, such spatial constructions are capable of serving a narrative or representational purpose. In this interview, filmmaker Chung Ji-woo, the director of such films as Happy End (1999), Blossom Again (2005), Modern Boy (2008), and Eungyo (2012), talks with Choi Won-joon about the interrelationship between film and architecture. They discuss the filmic reconstruction of 1930s’ Seoul, Paju Book City, spatial continuity, school architecture, and their shared love for found spaces, as well as controlled and uncontrollable aging processes in cinematic and architectural spaces.
