Korean Oriental Medicine has yielded its linguistic hegemony for the unmarked forms for doctors, hospitals, and medications to biomedicine despite its longer history and comparable legal legitimacy. This paper explores the forms and functions of the marked references to such ‘Western’ or biomedical entities in a data set of 15-hour-long naturally-occurring consultations between Oriental doctors and their patients who are situated within such medical heteroglossia (Bakhtin 1984). The excerpts illustrate that the marked references discursively construct Oriental doctor’s zone of expertise as opposed to that of their biomedical counterparts. For this reason, they are mostly made by the Oriental doctors except for those made to biomedical drugs. The patients, who do not have to construct their own zone of expertise, infrequently rely on such overt lexicalizations. They, instead, adopt them to clarify their referents between the two types of medications or to conceptually integrate both. Such overt marking and demarcation of the disparate zones of the two medicines, however, ironically end up highlighting the macrolinguistic context in which only the Oriental doctors construct their zone of expertise and professional identities against the backdrop of their biomedical counterparts, but presumably not the other way around.
