Despite much ink spilled on the discussions of Tone 3 sandhi, little attention has been paid to Tone 2 sandhi in Mandarin Chinese. Nonetheless, given the close relation between Tone 2 sandhi and stress, a thorough examination of Tone 2 sandhi helps achieve a better understanding of various significant prosodic phenomena not only in the varieties of Chinese but also in other tone languages. The purpose of this study is two-fold. It conducts a critical review of the phonological analyses of Tone 2 sandhi proposed in previous studies and provides a new analysis. More specifically, it reviews Chao’s classic view, in which Tone 2 Sandhi is treated as a rather simple tonal change process, as well as more recent phonological analyses, in which a H tone feature assimilation process triggers Tone 2 Sandhi. It is found that a number of important theoretical questions still remain unanswered, particularly regarding the interaction between tonal realization and stress condition and the relation between prosodic phrasing and tone sandhi in Mandarin Chinese. This study further suggests that Tone 2 sandhi be treated as a tonal feature spreading process, in which a H tone feature of the first syllable spreads to the following weak-stressed second syllable, and that this process occur in a three-syllable superfoot in strong-weak-strong stress condition.
