This thesis aims to comparatively analyze the two gasa pieces written in the 19th century, Bukchunga and Kunsanwolaega, that narrate the story of love and separation of a high official, Kim Jin Hyung and ginyeo Kunsanwol as the two pieces differ in the representation in accordance with the gender-oriented perspective. Bukchunga focuses more on the love story with the ginyeo than on the exile. In Bukchunga the encounter with Kunsalwol starts during the journey to Chilbo Mountain in the middle of the story.
Bukchunga and Kunsanwolaega overlap at the point of the romance between the a high official and ginyeo at Chilbo Mountain, but soon differ in their memories and representation. A high official who has absolute control over love and separation describes both memories while his counterpart only reminisces the separation. Bukchunga lacks consideration on abandoned Kunsanwol or sincerity.
On the other hand, the weaker party Kunsanwol’s state of mind is found in Kunsanwolaega. Kunsanwolaega delves more into separation than love as it is based on Kunsanwol’s perspective. Unlike that in Bukchunga, the separation described in Kunsanwolaega tells how Kim haksa’s final announcement causes a destructive agony in Kunsanwol’s life. The theatrical structure in particular reinforces the effect of representation and enables the reader to efficiently merge into the story.
In summary, Bukchunga and Kunsanwolaega are the 19th century gasa that represent two different perspectives on the same love and separation. They are classified in exile literature and kyubang literature respectively, however they are both excellent examples of the manifold property of 19th century gasa literature.
