The standard free relative pronoun what is known to be a singular in number and a noun in grammatical category. In case of transparent free relatives, however, what can be treated as plural and realized as a non-nominal grammatical category. In an attempt to explain the two different types of free relatives in a unified theory based on the minimalist approach, this paper claims that what has underspecified features in number and grammatical category, and if those underspecified features can find their goals, they are valuated via a probe-goal relation; otherwise, they are assigned the default values[-plural, noun] as a last resort. This proposal is based on Chomsky"s (2008) claim that what can project its label in the landing site. Given that what can be the head in the dislocated position, it comes to be assigned two thematic roles and two Cases. We provide a principled account for this seemingly problematic consequence.
