This paper seeks to compare the religious thoughts of Yi Hwang(李滉, 1501-1570), commonly known by his honorific name, Toe-Gye(退溪) who was known as one of the greatest Confucian scholars in the Joseon Chujahak tradition, and Lee Su-Jeong who wrote the first public announcement of Christian faith.
A goal of this paper is both to demonstrate the religious and philosophical relationship between the Joseon Jujahak tradition and Korean Protestant Christianity, and to highlight the idiosyncrasies of Korean religiosity by analyzing and explication the fundamental themes of the two religious traditions.
Rooting his interpretation of Confucianism in the presupposition of “no gap between Heaven and Human beings” (cheon-in mugan [天人無間]) of the Joseon Chujahak tradition), Toe-Gye developed “no-gap between Heaven and me” (cheon-a mugan [天我無間]) as the core of his philosophy. Because Lee’s confession was based not on the teachings of a foreign missionary, but on his own understanding of the Bible, an investigation of his confession will provide an opportunity to examine the relationship between the Joseon Jujahak tradition and the Christian Gospel for Korean Protestant Christians.
Lee Su-Jeong understands the essential teaching of the Bible as the “the principle of mutual correspondence between God and humanity” (sin-in sang gam jiri [ 神人相感之理]), based on his own reading of John 14. Lee’s confession of the “mutual correspondence between God and humanity” can be interpreted as another expression of “no-gap between Heaven and me” (cheon-a mu gan [天我無間]), the core theme in the Joseon Jujahak tradition.
