The current research examined what kinds of news releases the candidates produced when they submitted it to the political journalist during the 2012 national assembly election in Daegu, South Korea. In addition, the types of news releases and the subjects of the messages were researched based on the issues of election news, such as political negativism.
The research showed that the frequency of the candidates" press releases had changed based on the official voting events, such as voting at the absentee polling station, which was scheduled by the Korean national election commission. The election districts, where there was no dominant candidate or the candidate of opposition party having a strong political career, produced more news releases.
According to the result of data analysis, there was a significant difference among the party candidates on the subjects(policy issue, image, or campaign issue) of news releases. The candidates of the ruling party had disseminated fewer policy issues than other candidates. The study also revealed that the candidates of the opposition parties had higher proportion of negative messages than the ruling party candidates. Since the policy issue oriented messages tend to be more positive, it might be necessary for future candidates to produce more policy information.
Finally, this study proposed the press release of political party, or candidates should be developed with diverse formats multimedia journalists could use for different types of media.
