This paper suggests hermeneutical models of ecological church architecture and their practical applications which could be a way to deal with the ecological crisis. It considers the necessity and process of hermeneutical dialogues between church, architecture, and ecology and affirms three traditional metaphors of church (i.e. the people of God, the body of Christ, and the community of spirit) from the hermeneutics of consent. The paper then proposes ecofeminism, which is a dynamic unity of deep ecology and social ecology, as a hermeneutical framework of ecological church architecture. From an ecofeminist hermeneutics of suspicion, this paper reinterprets the three traditional metaphors of church into pluralistic community of liberation, the body of God, and the spirit of life and suggests them as hermeneutical models for the construction and understanding of ecological church architecture. It then reviews their ecological implications and architectural application in the spatial relation of the materialityof wall, the immateriality of emptiness, and the immaterial matter of window. Understanding the spirit of life as the dynamic unity of pluralistic community of liberation and the body of God, I argue that the core of the spirit of life is the principle of the dynamic unity, the spirituality of transcendent immanence, and the ethic of ecojustice, which needs to be embodied in ecological church architecture. I define the space of the spirit of life as the empty space of immaterial matter, the sacred space of transcendent immanence, and the useful space of ecojustice. As an alternative to the ecological crisis, ecological church architecture needs to embody the spirituality and ethic of the three spaces.
