The grammatical properties of the English comparative correlative construction have challenged both movement and non-movement approaches. In this paper, based on our corpus search, we claim that the distinctive properties of the construction as well as its sharing properties with other constructions can be better represented in terms of syntactic gradience couched upon the perspective of construction grammar. The construction is gradient in the sense that it lives a double life: it has both subordination and coordination properties. Developing the spirit of construction grammar set forth by Abeille? and Borsley (2008), the analysis shows the need to place more emphasis on the interaction between lexical properties and core constructions.
