"Baek"hi Jab"gi," which can be interpreted as "all kinds of miscellaneous forms of entertainment," was first originated as a holy form of recreative talents display staged to project religious authority or Shaman-oriented purposes. But later, as the society continued to grow and become diverse, they evolved into a form of entertainment.
In dynastic rituals, these entertainment rounds served as a tension breaker, as they followed strict and stressful(to the organizers) dynastic services, and magnified the services" meaning as a dynastic event that should be observed and celebrated at the same time. Entertainment rounds staged after the Buddhist events were used as a platform to spread Buddhist beliefs, and entertainment rounds which followed the welcoming ceremony of foreign emissaries served as a pure form of pleasure. Even in funerals, they appeared, and served as a method to console the spirit of the dead, and also the people who were left behind as well, who would have to return to their ordinary lives.
There are several reasons behind the nature of Baek"hi Jab"gi being amplified as a form of entertainment. First, the people"s view of value changed. In a society where politics and religion are separated from each other, the king must earn its own legitimacy not by its religious authority but by its political capability. The introduction of a new religion with a human-based thinking brought changes to the traditional Shaman value system. Second, foreign talent experts newly came to the country. They were from low social classes, and were summoned to play and entertain the guests at banquets. They displayed various forms of Baek"hi Jab"gi. And third, the Baek"hi Jab"gi entertainment earned quite a popularity. The ruling class used this form of entertainment to enlighten and control the public.
