The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in the children’s emotional intelligence depending on the quality level of the child care centers and children’s quantitative experience of child care. The data collection was initiated to select high-and low quality day care centers by asking 160 teachers and 240 parents registered at 80 child centers located in D city. As the result, 141 children of 36 months to 48 months registered at highly ranked quality 7 centers and 139 children with the same age registered at lowly ranked 10 centers. The quality of the child care was measured with the criteria of the “Certificate Indicator of the Child Care” by the Korea Assessment Agent for Child Care Centers and Kwon(2000)’s tool for the parent’s satisfaction with the child care service. The emotional intelligence was measured through “The Evaluating Indicator of the Emotional Intelligence of Young Children” by Kim(1999). The quantitative child care experience was inspected regarding to the first child-care beginning age, the daily and weekly care hours and the stability of the care-providers. The data was analyzed to get the group mean, the standard deviation, t-test and Pearson correlations by SPSS WIN 12.0 program. The results from this study were as follows.
First, the children registered at the qualitatively high centers showed high emotional intelligence than those registered at the poor quality centers. Second, in the high quality centers the relation of children’s emotional intelligence such as the awareness of self and other’s emotion and the relationship with others with the quantitative experience of nurture showed a strong relationships. In the poor quality centers, the poor relationships show positive relationship with the first time of the care, average use time for a week, while negative relationship with emotion and impulse control. However, the number of change times of the care-providers showed negative correlation in the two quality levels of the centers.
