As BIM is gradually invigorated in domestic and foreign, changes occur in various aspects to draw a better effectiveness of BIM applied. Out of these changes, the purpose of this article herein is twofold. One is to examine BIM-related occupations diversifying along with changes in the BIM-based process by expanding architecture and work areas in terms of BIM. The second is to describe establishment of BIM specialists’ role and all the circumstances of it in domestic. Changes occur in working practices, caused by complicated, diversified construction industry, and changes also occur in traditional design process as BIM is applied to it. For one of these process changes, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) suggests Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) as an alternative to enhance productivity of construction industry, which stands for integrated operation methods conducting project performance phase, participant composition, and project operation method in a general manner, breaking from traditional project delivery system, phased-operation methods conducted by each different contractor in phases such as planning, design, construction, and maintenance management. A new BIM-related professional field is required to reflect these changes in working process, and apply for BIM technology, standards, modeling, etc., and accordingly, diverse BIM-related occupations are springing up. According to research theses conducted by Barison and Santos, BIM specialists are described by classifying them in detail as BIM Modeller, BIM Analyst, BIM Application Developer/BIM Software Developer, Modelling Specialist, BIM Consultant, BIM Researcher, and BIM Manager. U.S. careers websites shows the BIM-related occupations stated above are utilized in the working-level field. Out of BIM specialists, in case of BIM managers who serve as important position by planning items related to BIM operation to achieve project goals, and managing and controling each one of main agents’ role and task throughout the BIM process, BIM managers’ responsibilities and qualifications are specified in some BIM-applied guidelines or by design offices in the U.S. In South Korea, various BIM specialists are required to conduct BIM projects in case that large-sized projects and the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) System are operated by using BIM. However, BIM specialists’ work scope, role target, and others are not clearly specified yet. Therefore, urgently required is an environment that enables BIM specialists to smoothly serve as coordinator in BIM projects among relevant task employees by defining the BIM-based process, clarifying BIM specialists’ role and status in their company, and assigning their authority on responsibility.
