At the turn of the twenty-first century, the letter tong 通 (pass through, common, or communicate) of tonghap (consolidation), sotong (communication), tongchal (penetration) and tongseop (convergence) has become a hot topic in our society. As a new industry created by fusion of disparate industries rises up as a new blue ocean, communication serves as a crucial factor among families, organizations or members of society. Currently, interdisciplinary convergence for studies that are similar or fragmented is being all the rage at colleges and universities, ostensibly to produce the right people for a new era. Recent changes in the urban design in South Korea are very worthy of notice. This indicates that collaboration between specialists relevant to city and architecture has flourished. This is well on the way to establishing itself as ‘integration design mode’ conducting urban design and architectural design at the same time, beyond what was simply collaborated between certain specialized fields in the past. As the MA, MP modes are introduced to the urban design process, specialists in the architectural field participated in the process from urban design planning to consummatory phase; this satisfies the needs of three-dimensional urban space design, for which many people have great sympathy. Until now, urban design in South Korea has been conducted in a divided form: development and planning. However, this is not an appropriate system to contain current changes in social, economic circumstances in South Korea. As urban architecture is related to human life and existence although urban architecture is high in terms of technical engineering, biased knowledge system and information cannot contain the relationship between urban architecture and human life and existence. The time is past when architecture and the city were considered as a discrete one. The attitude disregarding studies that do not seem to match other studies should be abolished, such as the relationship between architecture and social sciences, and between the city and humanities. To achieve this, a prerequisite is change in many things and attitude that can accept new, various knowledge systems. It is about time to think what the purpose is, caused by change from four-year system to five-year system in the department of architecture, to deepen ‘professional’ education or to widen education for professionals. If architecture is often regarded as ‘creative work’, we should contemplate what to prepare and how to put it into practice in the foreseeable future.
