The Treaty of Chanyuan (?淵) is reckoned as a historical event which is both delicate and meaningful in the Chinese history. It is because what the treaty implicates is not simple. First of all, the treaty is the first case that the dynasty that dominated the central areas of China recognized officially that of surrounding different nations as an equal and friendly reality. Moreover, Song dynasty had to pay an indemnity of 100,000 ounces of silver and 300,000 bolts of silk annually. That is to say, an equal diplomatic relationships and substantial unequal ones are involved complexly in this treaty.
This compound contents of the treaty served as a momentum of being recognized as a humiliating and disgraceful event ever since then in spite of its diplomatic and rhetorical equal relationships. As for the Chinese, it was, therefore, regarded as the typical case of a national disgrace.
Recently as Khitan Empire is recognized as a minority dynasty of China, the new researchs on this subject is being conducted. Accordingly the cognition to the Treaty of of Chanyuan takes on complicated aspects:it served as a critical momentum of a complex of the Chinese and minorities. This argument is different from that of a national disgrace, the cognition and emotion that the Chinese had before.
In conclusion, according to the Treaty of Chanyuan unitary diplomatic relationships around the dynasties of the central areas changed to new plural and equal international relationships around Kithan Empire and Song dynasty in East Asia, including Goryeo (高麗) dynasty and Xisha (西夏). The plural relationships like this are of great significance in East Asian history, and offer a good example against a historical view focusing on the central areas of China.
