It seems very important at the current situation to review the existing researches critically, which attempt to explain the socio-cultural change on the regions ranging from the northeastern China to Korea and Japan, and to seek an alternative research paradigm in the macroscopic perspective. Although the researchers from three countries of contemporary Northeastern Asia, that is to say, Korea, China and Japan, have attempted to interpret the pre- or ancient culture and to explain the evolutionary process of the society in these regions respectively, it is also true that they tend to show a big difference in perspective between them according to ethnic and political point of view.
The archaeologists under the Japanese imperialism conceived a regional boundary of Northeastern Asia based upon racial culturalism and tried to sort out the relationship between regional cultures on such a massive scale of space with phylogenic idea. Korean archaeologists tend to confirm the Northeastern China and the Korean peninsular with the consideration of a range of national history rather than of their research areas. Recently the Chinese academics argue the investigation theory on civilization under the premise of ‘multinational unified state’, and attempts to include various historical entities of the northeastern part of China into its own national history, which tend to provoke severe conflicts and tense.
The current archaeological research on the Manchuria is under the situation in which the interpretation with reference to a phylogenic and national history and political perspective with statism conflict each other.
This research aims at discussing about archaeological perspectives and theoretical premises on the explanation of distribution and change of material culture in the Northeastern Asia in the pre- and historical period. In order to do this, it is necessary to critically review the research perspective based upon national history and statism. And I do explore the theoretical framework within which regional interaction was investigated on a massive scale in archaeology and seek an alternative for archaeological research in the Northeastern Asia.
