Today, there are a wide range of Protestant welfare agencies, Diakonia, in Germany. This is the result of the social situation of the 18th and 19th centuries in Germany. The fundamental principles and criteria of the German Protestant Diakonia are the spirit of social solidarity and the spirit of supplement. Diakonia thus plays an important role in the German social state system. This article describes the emergence of Diakonia and its basic tenants as an illuminating, awakening movement associated with social issues of the 19th century. Models of the Diakonia network (Johann Hinrich Wichern), Diakonia social enterprise (Gustav Werner), and Diakonia welfare city (Friedrich von Bodellschwingh), which are important aspects of the history of German Protestantism show that through its practice, Korean Protestantism can also promote and deepen social solidarity in Korean society.
