In order to develop a mission theory and practice applicable to a certain context it is necessary, first, to understand that context. The text begins, thus, with an examination of three dominant sociological interpretations of the decline and ongoing role of religion in western societies: secularization, the market model, and individualization. These approaches are then applied to the specific contexts of the United Kingdom and Germany, with mixed results. Informed by this survey of the European context, a new paradigm of mission is developed. “Mission as oikumenical doxology” refers to the essential nature of the Christian community as a glorifying community. This names and takes seriously the situation of Christianity within especially Germany, the various challenges it faces and the opportunities already present to it, including, for example, the use of different media in presenting the gospel. Locating mission within a doxological spirituality empowers the church to celebrate what she has already received and to move in hope toward the promises God has given her.
