This paper suggests that the protagonist Edna in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening is a kind of existential hero who engages in an act of artistic creation and rebellion by choosing to take her own life. In this paper, a close textual reading of Edna’s final moments before her death is analyzed for signs of her intention to kill herself. Her motivation for taking her own life is also closely scrutinized. The paper draws on the ideas of existential philosophy, artistic creation, and rebellion. Using the existential philosophy of French philosopher Albert Camus, it is argued that Edna’s suicide is an outlet for artistic creation and rebellion against the absurd circumstances of her life and times. A brief summary of the difficulties and tribulations faced by Edna is also given. Camus’ views on the origin of the suicidal impulse are used to interpret Edna’s decision to end her own life. Several links are made between Camus’ discussion of suicide in The Myth of Sisyphus and Edna’s behavior in the text. Previous research on Edna‘s suicide from a variety of different sources including Joyce Dyer, Mary Bird, and Elaine Showalter is also summarized to provide a sense of context to the discussion. Reference is also made to William Wordsworth’s ideas on poetry. (Catholic University of Daegu)
