The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is a memory play set in an alley in St. Louis during the 1930s. Tom, who is frustrated by his job and burdened by his family, yearns for escape from harsh reality and spends his time in the cinema. Laura, Tom"s sister, who is shy and crippled, has and inferiority complex and longs for comfort through a world of her own symbolized by her collection of little glass animals. Amanda, Tom"s mother, yearns for the comfort of her youth illustrated by the memory of Blue Mountain.
Movies, Blue Mountain, and the glass menagerie are symbols which reveal the characters" life and yearning for comfort from reality. The fire-escape, whose name is "a touch of accidental poetic truth," serves as both the entrance and exit of the apartment. In the play, "fire" represents "the slow and implacable desperation" of the Wingfield family, and "escape" signifies their running away from their harsh reality and suffering. This paper discusses the meaning of such symbols as the fire-escape, Blue Mountain, movies, and glass animals.
