Why sailor suits, which originally used to be the uniform of British sailors, have been that of schoolgirls, never worn by boys, men and even women, in Japan? This research shows that Japanese people in the first half of the 20th century did not recognise sailor suits as naval masculine costume, but as similar to a traditional paperwork which was thought to have some magic power to shut off kegare, an invisible power causative of disaster. So sailor suits were regarded to be suitable for girls who were to be married soon after her graduation.
