The presence of noise and the degradation of time resolution adversely impact the reliability of detecting material"s flaws by ultrasonic Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Digital signal processing (DSP) methods offer powerful solutions to overcome these problems helping the inspectors to detect and interpret the true flaws’ signals appropriately.
In this work, we propose a new de-noising method for ultrasonic NDT signals based on the wavelet packet (WP) to filter the materials grain noise. Unlike the conventional WP, the proposed WP is shift invariant, which is a desirable property in filtering the grain noise that is encountered in many ultrasonic NDT applications.
Furthermore; we introduce LMS-based adaptive deconvolution filters to handle time resolution degradation. Leaky LMS and normalized leaky LMS have been developed to facilitate the hardware implementation of LMS. This advantage makes them suitable to utilize in ultrasonic NDT units, a class of applications require efficient signal processing algorithms.
Experiment for the de-noising was carried out on a stainless steel block. Resolution enhancement was investigated by experiments to resolve closely-spaced reflectors. The results showed improved solutions for the challenges of defects detection and thus, improved testing reliability.
