This research intends to trace the historical changes that had occurred during the post-medieval period until the middle of 18th Century in the field of cartography in Milan. Different methodologies, that had been adopted throughout centuries, show oscillating phenomenon between monumental and iconographic symbolism on one hand, and philological and pragmatical rationality on the other. Furthermore, gradual development of approach show the specification in the realm of cartography in the historical center as well as expansion in the territorial dimension. Each category of maps shows, at the same time, the evolution of method of representation and the reflection of power from Visconti, Sforza, Spanish and Habsburg dominion. By elaboration of Theresian cadastre directed by Maris Theresia, and concluded in 1757, the traditional cartography of Milan as well as that of Europe changes drastically. First of all, symbolic representation of city becomes integrated with scientific analysis of urban facts. Secondly, traditional cartography fuses with rational cadastre to become an important medium of knowledge and policy in the realm of territory. Thirdly, the relationship between cartography and power results more complex as the adoption of rational and positivist methodology was done not by modern state but enlighten monarchy. Lastly, environment in which Theresian cadastre was edited indirectly explains the formation of young Giambattista Nolli who later elaborated the famous map of Rome, widely known and ‘Nolli’s map’.
