As one of the most frequently used items in Present-day English, a clause connective as shows diverse functional usages such as an adverb, a conjunction, a relative clause, and a preposition. In particular, this linking element advances in grammaticalization into diverse grammatical markers, such as emphatic marker, causative marker, concessive force marker, marker of hypothetic-fact expression, and marker of likeness through diverse channels (‘polygrammaticalization’ Craig 1991). This paper aims to illustrate how the polygrammaticalized development of as is emerged within a grammaticalization framework and how the clausal linker has come to acquire diverse grammatical meanings that carry the speaker’s subjective evaluations on the situation. This paper suggests that the emergence of functional marking of as is attributable to metonymy, prgmatic inference, frame-of-focus variation (Rhee 2000), and subjectification (Traugott 1982; Traugott & Konig 1991; Traugott & Dasher 2002), which are considered the enabling forces for the semantic-functional extension. This study also examines the frequency of grammatical functions of as, showing which functional marking of the clausal linker is more frequently used than others through the examination of contemporary corpus data.
