Tourette syndrome(TS) is a chronic psychiatric disorder which begins during childhood and it is negatively affect the patients’ emotional, academic and their occupational activities. Neurobiological basis is very important in occurrence and treatment of TS. The psychiatrists who evaluate and treat TS should understand the neural basis of symptom onset, mechanism of medication and non-medicational treatment as well as psychological, developmental, and behavioral knowledge of TS. Nowadays, use of first, second generation antipsychotic medication is common in clinical situation but some sorts of tics are not well controlled. I reviewed brief mechanisms and effectiveness of some medications such as dopamine agonists, GABA agents, alpha antagonists, and botulinum toxin. I also introduced some non-medicational methods such as electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and deep brain stimulation.
