Traditionally, Confucianism made the interest in human beings as its subject. Chinese missionaries who recognized it decided the cultural adaptationistic missionary policy to replenish Confucianism with religiousity. This was a fairly effective method, but, also has become a cause for confusion in understanding the academic world of Yakyong Jeong(Dasan, 茶山 丁若鏞) today. This study examined how much relation the concepts of Heaven and God of Yakyong Jeong had with the Western Studies of Jesuit Accommodation with focus on that.
First, the concept of Heaven of Yakyong Jeong can be viewed to have succeeded to the concepts of Heaven of Nature and Heaven of Morality of Confucianist tradition. Confucianism could get the spotlight as humanics in the modern times because it was magnified that the concept of Heaven of primitive religion was only demanded as a moral ground in Confucius and Mencius. Therefore, it should be viewed that the keynote of thoughts of Yakyong Jeong is modernistic and antropocentric because it still remains not in the Western Studies of Jesuit Accommodation based on medieval Christianity but in the Confucianist tradition.
Next, the concept of God of Yakyong Jeong can be viewed to be highly related to Western Studies in that it used the expression of ‘God’, which was recognized as a religious terminology in the tradition of East Asia. This is also identified in the fact that missionaries first used the expressions of Heaven and God together and later used only the terminology of Heaven and Lord of Heaven. However, the God of Yakyong Jeong had the style of existence settled in the moral mind of human beings as Providence, and it should be viewed not to have got out of Confucianist tradition in fact.
Yakyong Jeong denied the relation with Western Studies during his lifetime. Of course, this action might be an inevitable choice because of political situation at that time. However, it is judged that he did not get out of the Confucianist tradition even in the concept of God, which is evaluated to be the most highly related to Western Studies. Therefore, this point is needed to be reinterpreted not in the existing viewpoint of Apologetics but in the philosophical viewpoint.
