The goal of this paper is to examine the reliability of Kim Jong-ryun’s copies of the letters from prison written by Yi Sun-i, and to solve the interpretative problems which are found in annotations to Kim Jong-ryun’s copies as well as in translations of Kim Jong-ryun’s copies which have been published so far. The annotation by Kim Jung-gu(1965), the annotation by the Research foundation of Korean Church History(1982), the translation by Yang Hee-chan and Byun Joo-seung(2002), and the translation with annotation by Lee Tae-yeong and Yoo jong-kuk(2011) have contributed to an intimate interpretation of Kim Jong-ryun’s copies. However, considerable parts of these copies still remain unperceivable. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss how we should read and understand those parts.
But, there is more urgent issue. It is well known that some contents of Kim Jong-ryun’s copies are not found in Mgr Daveluy’s French translation, and that some contents of Mgr Daveluy’s French translation are not found in Kim Jong-ryun’s copies. For this reason, some researchers suspected that there should be significant differences between Kim Jong-ryun’s copies and the copies which Mgr Daveluy used for French translation. If it were true, it would be dangerous to take Kim Jong-ryun’s copies for basis of research as most researchers have done so far. Therefore, it is very important to go over the differences between Kim Jong-ryun’s copies and Mgr Daveluy’s French translation, and to define where the differences come from.
