This paper focuses on poet’s responsibility as an ecological thinker in Shelley’s A Defence of Poetry and Snyder’s A Place in Space. Shelley and Snyder think much of the role of poet and poem in building the bridge between man and nature. Both of them believe that a poet can make a better world by means of poems and that poet and poem have ontological meaning.
In ecological perspective, the change of anthropocentric consciousness into ecocentric consciousness is the first and foremost step in this period of the environmental crisis and, therefore, any device or any catalyst which can facilitate the change is urgently required. Poetry has a history as old as human history itself and has pervaded human heart deeply and widespreadly. Seen from this, as a stimulus to see clearly the relationship between man and nature and as an catalyst for the ideal habitat with man and nature, poetry is the most fitting device.
Though Shelley and Snyder lived in the different period, their ecological visions and consciousness can be an immediate influence on the change to overcome this environmental crisis. The reason why Shelley defends poetry has the same meaning that the place in space where Snyder want to live. They have same dream in which man and nature live with harmony, and this will pave the way to possibilities for a lasting ideal habitat on earth.
