Report Errors

A record of the experiences of castaways drifting in an East Asian sea can be used for analyzing the history among countries and areas in East Asia during the pre-modern period. Korean records of castaways, classified by the writers of these texts, may be divided into three groups : records written by those experienced at drifting at sea, those written by officials ordered to investigate the castaways, and those written by a third party who heard from one or more castaways about their experiences. There also are various records of Koreans whose ships reached China, Japan, Ryukyu, Taiwan, or Vietnam when classifying these records by countries and by the areas to which these people drifted. Newly discovered records, together with new interpretations of the records of castaways, will likely be plentiful in research on maritime history and the history of interaction in East Asia.
